Does a Good Sex Life Mean a Better Life?

Posted on September 23, 2013 in Sexual Health

Absolutely it does. Sex is not only fun, it can improve every aspect of a person's life: physically, chemically, mentally and emotionally.

From a purely physical standpoint, sex can be a total body workout depending on how active the experience is for both partners. Every muscle is engaged during the act – the arms, legs, butt, and core are all getting a workout. Calories are burned all throughout sex.

For both men and women, sex is another activity that acts as a form of stress relief and can reduce blood pressure levels; this is tied to the oxytocin that is released during an orgasm. It counteracts the effects of cortisol (a stress hormone). Oxytocin is also responsible for the very intense state of relaxation that occurs after an orgasm, allowing a person to fall asleep faster. This chemical also creates a deep physical and emotional bond between partners; leading many couples to hold each other closely right after sex.

Increased sexual activity may also be responsible for fighting colds and the flu. Couples that have sex several times a week have higher amounts of the antibody immunoglobulin A (IgA), which helps stave off sickness. For men, sexual activity – whether it is with a partner or through masturbation – may also combat the development of prostate cancer.
