Prostate Cancer Awareness: What You Need to Know

Posted on September 26, 2019 in Urology

With most types of cancer, awareness of the disease, its symptoms, and its risk factors can quite literally save lives. Prostate cancer is no exception, as early intervention can prevent the spread of the disease. We encourage men and their families to become familiar with prostate cancer symptoms and risk factors in order to help ensure that the disease is caught as early as possible, so treatment can begin.

Prostate cancer symptoms
Have you or any man you know experienced any of the following?

  • Frequent urination, particularly during the nighttime
  • Weak urination (dribbling, inconsistent flow)
  • Incontinence
  • Painful urination (burning, stinging, or sharp pain)
  • Impotence (erectile dysfunction)
  • Painful bowel movements or rectum pain
  • Blood in urine and/or semen
  • A stiff back, pelvis, thighs, or hips

Patients should note that just because you experience one of the above symptoms does not necessarily mean a cancer diagnosis is imminent. Many conditions share similar symptoms but have nothing to do with cancer, let alone prostate cancer. Patients are encouraged to talk to their doctors directly about their concerns so that the need for screening can be determined. You can experience urinary incontinence without having prostate cancer just as you can experience a stiff back without cancer being a possibility. The key is not to ignore such issues, but to connect with your doctor so he or she can decide on next steps.

Prostate cancer risk factors
Who is at risk for prostate cancer?

  • Men who are age 40 and older have an increased risk of prostate cancer.
  • African American men have an increased risk of this type of cancer.
  • Those with a family history of cancer, including prostate cancer, are at higher risk.
  • Those who lead a sedentary lifestyle have a higher risk of cancer.
